PUSHING THE LIMITS OF CREATIVITY AND TECHNOLOGY - ARTURO BRENA

FROM EMMY WINNING GRAPHICS TO DUAL SCULPTING AND LIVE CG TV PRESENTERS

We had the pleasure of meeting Arturo Brena, a graphics specialist and visual artist with a passion for blending creativity and technology. With a broad range of talents spanning real-time motion graphics and 3D animation, Arturo is the founder of KeexFrame, a company dedicated to combining excellent design with cutting-edge technology.

Just before lockdown, Arturo and KeexFrame were able to develop a POC (proof of concept) for "the creation of a digital avatar for live TV" with funding from 'Epic MegaGrants'. This new technology involved the creation of a live CG TV presenter, which was brought to life by an actor using motion capture technology.

Innovation is at the heart of Arturo's work, and his achievements have not gone unnoticed. He has received many awards throughout his career, including an Emmy for his implementation of "flomotion" technology for the CBS coverage of the 2009 US Open. But Arturo's expertise isn't limited to digital art, he's also taken the traditional art form of shadow sculpting to a new level.

Through his innovative approach to shadow sculpting, Arturo has created what he calls "dual sculpting." Unlike other shadow sculptures that rely on a combination of objects and debris to cast a shadow, Arturo's sculptures are independent works of art that take on a new dimension when illuminated from a specific angle. The shadows that these sculptures cast are an integral part of the art piece, often complementing or contradicting the theme of the sculpture.

Arturo's creative talents extend beyond his work with KeexFrame and shadow sculpting. He has completed the Unreal Engine Fellowship twice, and in this episode of The VFX Process, we focus on one of his fellowship-developed short films titled "The Thief". Using Metahuman and motion capture, Arturo enhances the storytelling and immerses the viewer in a visually stunning experience.

With his unique blend of creativity and technology, Arturo Brena is a force to be reckoned with in the world of visual art. Keep an eye out for more of his ground breaking work!
